It’s a strong statement when people try to make a difference in poor places, such as Uganda. Ever get the feeling that you have a higher calling? Like to travel differently than with a big group of people? Then Beacon of Hope Uganda –can provide you with an assortment of opportunities for finding some answers through our summer community volunteering vacations and tour experiences under our community development.
Summer community volunteering is one of the most diverse and rewarding volunteering experiences, providing volunteers to get involved with a huge range of activities from construction, to teaching and even environmental conservation. Whether a volunteer is working in a children’s shelter or elderly social centre or with remote villages, summer community volunteering offers the chance to discover many different aspects of volunteering and make a truly positive impact on the lives of others.
On this summer volunteering project volunteers prefer to be helping a Ugandan community move towards a brighter and healthier future, and they can become involved in many different capacities. Working within the community, helping people that are less fortunate, and experiencing traditional Ugandan culture are just some of the wonderful experiences they will take away from this placement.
Projects can be diverse and it might be a rural community to improve on their healthcare, working with orphans to improve their standard of living, building a community school, or just participate in the community outreaches organized by our Coordinators or helping youth with their ventures.
- Community education
- Environmental awareness workshops
- Community healthcare outreach
- Improving village infrastructure and facilities
- Arranging extracurricular childcare activities
- Liaising with other prevention organizations
Volunteers wishing to get involved in one of our Community Development Projects in Uganda will work as part of a team dedicated to the development of Uganda through Education, Women Empowerment, Youth Development, and Environmental Conservation, Water and Sanitation and so many other development initiatives.
On first arrival, most volunteers sample all the projects before selecting the tasks that suit them best. The type of work volunteers get involved with will be dependent on their interests, abilities, level of experience as well as their comfort levels.
One of the advantages of the summer community volunteering project is that they are not limited to one job role and will have the opportunity to ‘sample’ other roles during the placement. To become involved in other projects they simply inform a member of staff who will happily make any necessary arrangements.
Volunteer work side by side the locals’ on-going brick construction and water building projects, youth projects, healthcare outreaches and women empowerment projects in the community.
Some tasks include farming, animal rearing, construction of the schools, expansion, water well building and renovation work. Volunteers do not need prior experience, but skilled workers are very welcome.
This is a very hand on, hands dirty sort of program. Enthusiasm, a good sense of humor and helping spirit are required.
Volunteering requires flexibility, patience; those who are self-starters, and people who genuinely respect the host people and their culture. Volunteers never come here to teach the people western ways, nor are here to save the people. Volunteers come to share their energy and time with the people, to experience their culture first hand and to grow themselves.
You may learn a new language, a new culture, and a new way of life. Flexibility and patience are the keys to having a satisfying experience.
